2011 Australasian Society of Aerospace Medicine Conference
When: 6 - 9 October 2011
Where: Crowne Plaza, Newcastle
Attendees: Approx 130
Event Type: scientific meeting, medicine, aviation, australasia, association
About the Event
The Australasian Society of Aerospace Medicine (ASAM) is the authoritative professional body whose role is to cultivate and promote aerospace medicine and related disciplines in Australasia. Comprising more than 800 members from many fields of medical practice the Society has provided professional development for its members by hosting successful scientific meetings most years.
The focus for the 2011 ASAM Scientific Meeting was on endocrinology and ophthalmology with the theme 'Keeping your eye on the ball'. With the increasing prevalence of obesity and diabetes, and the recent implementation of CASA’s protocol for Class 2 pilots with Diabetes requiring insulin, the theme-related topics are most timely and very relevant to DAMEs, DAOs and credentialed optometrists.
We have been most fortunate to secure Dr Raymond Johnston as the 2011 John Lane Orator. Dr Johnston is an endocrinologist with a private pilot’s licence from the United Kingdom and only recently retired as Head of the CAA-UK’s Aviation Health Unit. As well, our colleagues from New Zealand will be sponsoring the Patterson Trust speaker, Associate Professor Peter Liu. Associate Professor Liu is an endocrinologist and andrologist with an interest in sleep medicine.
The Welcome Reception was held at Fort Scratchley and the Conference Gala Dinner was held at the Newcastle Museum.

On behalf of the committee and members I would like to thank you and your team for the successful delivery of the 2011 conference in Newcastle.
Jasmine and Catherine were extremely helpful and showed outstanding sensitivity to my formal requirements in the sessions. I was able to thoroughly enjoy the conference myself and not have to spend time worrying about what was happening next!
The conference was a triumph from both a scientific and social perspective and your professional management team should all be congratulated.
I look forward to working with you again in 2012.
Dr. Greig P. CHAFFEY
